What is TPO in nail products?
TPO (Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide) is a photo initiator used in UV gel formulations that helps the product cure quickly (under UV light). Why is TPO being banned from nail products?
TPO has been reclassified as a CMR (Reproductive Toxicity) 1B substance under EU Regulation 2024/197. Which means it is recognized as carcinogenic & it may negatively affect fertility. This means it is no longer allowed in cosmetic products, per EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009. From September 2025, products containing TPO can no longer be sold or made available in the EU market.
